In the summer of 2023, I was elected by the MiraCosta Community College student body to represent them at the Board of Trustees. Coming out of the pandemic, I prioritized the advocacy of basic needs and equal opportunities for students. I realized that a large population of community college students struggled with these issues, and that for a lot of students, overcoming these obstacles could significantly enable them to achieve their goals.
As such, a key theme of my term was increasing awareness of these issues through dialogue with statewide student leaders and ultimately, producing resolutions through governing bodies like the Student Senate for California Community Colleges. The most notable of which were;
S24.02.02 Mobilizing Undergraduate Research at California Community Colleges
S24.03.02 Addressing Systemic Inequity Through Pay Frequency Increase
These resolutions acutely targeted the core issues students faced in community college and recommended innovative approaches to address systemic challenges.
